Aerosol Event Identification using Machine Learning at the Southern Great Plains Site (AIM-SGP)¶

2026 ARM Summer School Project¶
Random Forest Model Development for automatic daily New Particle Formation (NPF) event classification
Project Scope¶
Gas-phase molecules undergo chemical and microphysical transformations to form new aerosol particles through nucleation and subsequent growth.
“Banana Curve” within Scanning Mobility Particle Sizer (SMPS) aerosol particle size distribution observations are a known signature of a new particle formation event.
Can a feature based classification of these events allow for automatic detection at the Southern Great Plains site?
